Watching the recent Democratic Debate, I couldn’t help but think how unnecessary it was for me to watch because no matter what happens, voting for the left is the only right thing to do.
It’s no different from holding your breath where when you do, up to a certain point, you realize that breathing is essential and really, the right thing to do. Unless of course, it isn’t the right thing to do and as a writer, I’m now tempted to figure out what kind of fiction I can conjure up to make that the case.
Nonetheless, there were many moments which stood out from the Democratic Debate and one of them was Martin O’Malley’s determination to stop calling the people who fight our wars ”boots on the ground.”
Here’s a post about this very thing by someone rooting for the candidate:
“If I am ever asked what impact I could possibly make supporting a long shot candidate Governor Martin O’Malley I’ll remind them because he decided to run and keep in this race Luke Russert will no longer use the phrase boots on the ground (view previous post). Sorry if I sound like Vpotus Joe Biden when I say, It’s a big fucking deal! Luke Russert is an influential pundit with NBC and is the son of the late Tim Russert. Words matter. People matter. Changing dialogue matters.” [Joy Eleanor Parks]
Yes, I agree with all of this because of how challenging it is to think in these terms.
It’s challenging to value people you don’t engage with, people you only see on the screen in stock war footage, people who become statistics.
Don’t try to force it though, because these people are the ones who are willing to overcome all odds to become part of the war machine and if you sort through my work, you’ll understand when/where I see the difference.
Let’s let boots on the ground be what the Republicans stick to. You know, the same bloodthirsty tyrants who claim to support our boys but won’t hesitate to send them into slaughter.
As to Martin O’Malley, as things stand right now he doesn’t stand a chance. He sealed his fate in many ways but definitely on The Diane Rehm Show last year.
Even so, he’s not entirely disposable. That’s why those three great people on that stage last night; would be a great administration when they run it together.
